Guest travel review: Hotel Regina, Les Gets

It’s Ski Bear and Patchy Bear here, standing in for uncle Teddy at the French ski resort of Les Gets

Dad’s sister booked their short ski break to Les Gets. The short transfer time from Geneva made Les Gets ideal for a short break, enabling them to ski for half a day on their day of arrival

Dad’s sister made all the arrangements. Dad’s family love to plan holidays with nothing left to chance. With resources like Google Maps and review websites available, it’s becoming much easier to find out a lot about the places and things that you book. Of course reviews have have to be read with a discerning eye as there are fake ones out there but mostly, they do help

As dad and sis aren’t spring chickens any more, top of their requirement for ski accommodation is proximity to the slopes. Les Gets has few truly ski in ski out places, so sis chose Hotel Regina

Hotel Regina is located centrally with a 50m walk to the main Chavanne ski lift area where a chair lift and bubble gondola depart. An escalator makes it easy to get up from the road level to the lift level. The free bus and petit train service to the Mont Chery ski area also leave from here

Guest travel review: Les Gets

It’s Patchy Bear and Ski Bear here. We’re writing on uncle Teddy’s blog this week from the ski resort of Les Gets, which is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, which includes resorts like Avoriaz and Morzine

Dad and sis chose Les Gets as it’s one of the closest resorts to Geneva, perfect for their short 2 and and half day ski trip. They only got the local ski pass, making it cheaper than the whole Portes du Soleil pass. To connect with the rest of the area, you need to get to Morzine and go up the gondola on the Avoriaz side of the valley or catch a bus to the Prodain lift

Guest travel review: Is skiing for you?

Hi there. It’s Patchy Bear and Ski Bear here. Uncle Teddy is letting us guest blog this week as we’ve come skiing in Les Gets with dad and his sister

Dad and sis have been lucky to have been skiing quite a lot and they love it but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. So, what are the good and bad things about skiing? Continue reading

Guest travel review: Skiing in Les Gets

Please let me introduce my friends Patchy Bear and Ski Bear. They’re are part of dad and his sister’s inner circle of bears. There are 6 of us altogether in the inner circle

Patchy and  Ski Bear go skiing as Patchy is a polar bear and Ski Bear had skis. This week, dad and his sister are away skiing in France for 3 days and my friends will be posting some guest travel reviews. So, over to them

For short ski trips, it’s important to maximise time on the slopes by minimising travel times. In that sense, Geneva is a good choice of airport as you can be in some of the best European ski resorts in about an hour to an hour’s drive

The last 2 years, dad and sis have gone to the Portes du Soleil ski area, which straddles France and Switzerland. It’s a sprawling area with different bases and you may need to catch a few buses to get around the entire area – there’s a local area challenge to get around the entire area in a day Continue reading

Travel review: Pies & Thighs, Brooklyn

One of dad and my favourite TV programs is Diners, Drive Ins and Dives on the Food Channel, where Guy Fieri drives around America visiting less high brow eateries and uncovering local gems

Tying in nicely with our love of fried chicken and our visit to New York, we looked up one of the restaurants featured in the program on our trip to New York last summer. Pies and Thighs specialise in fried chicken and huge pies. They have a couple of branches but we chose their location in Brooklyn as it was closer to our hotel

P&T1

We chose to have brunch there and arrived early as there’s a no reservation policy. It isn’t the largest restaurant and we were glad to be early arrivers as there was a healthy queue of hungry diners by the time we left Continue reading

Theatre review: Wicked

Dad gave ‘future mom’ tickets to see Wicked in the theatre for Christmas. Going to the theatre is a wonderfully quintessential British experience. We’re so lucky that we have one of the top theatre districts in the world here in London

Wicked is playing at the Apollo Victoria theatre, which isn’t in the West End, London’s main theatre district. Be aware that great dining options are quite limited in the immediate vicinity of the theatre

Travel review: Staten Island ferry

There are very few truly free things in life but in New York, you can experience one of them. The Staten Island ferry plies a commuter route between Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan Island and Staten Island and it costs absolutely nothing to ride on it

It’s famous as the best way to get a free view of the Statue of Liberty, which is west of the route that the ferry travels. However, this is the reason most tourists go on the ferry, so there will be a bit of a rush if you’re boarding from Manhattan. Dad and I find it best to wait for the return journey when people have got bored on that view and it’s less crowded on the side of the boat facing the statue
