Star Wars Gifts from Royal Mail

For those of you born in this century, let me explain what stamps are. A long, long time ago, in a place not that far away, before the whizzy internet was invented, humans were forced to communicate by old-fashioned paper. These communications, called letters, were delivered by an organisation called the Post Office. Users of this service had to put something called a stamp on the envelope containing the letter to indicate payment had been made for delivering the letter

These stamps were usually standard and boring but to commemorate special events, the Post Office would issue special stamps with designs to reflect these events

If you still haven’t bought those Christmas presents yet and you have loved ones who love Star Wars, dad and I would just like to bring to your attention this beautiful collection of stamps brought out to celebrate the new Star Wars film. They make a unique and beautiful gift to celebrate Star Wars and Christmas at the same time Continue reading

Film review – Hunger Games Mockingjay part 2

Dad and I had already invested a lot of time in watching the previous instalments of Hunger Games, so we went to see how the whole saga concludes

Following in the footsteps and box office success of the Twilight series in bringing teen multi-book series to the big screen, the Hunger Games has carried more mature themes, covering issues such as the inequalities arising from unfettered capitalism, the way absolute power corrupts, the pervasive way media invades our lives and therefore the need for the powerful to control it and in the case of the dystopian world of the books and films, this leading to society ultimately watching children kill each other for entertainment Continue reading

Dad’s review of Ma’ Plucker, Soho, London

Dad is a sucker for fried chicken. Whisper it softly but he likes KFC. He claims it’s because he’s Malaysian and to be fair to him, in Malaysia, going out for KFC is an occasion without the stigma of being seen as merely junk fast food

So, when dad’s good friend Andrew asked  whether he wanted to try a new chicken place in Soho, Ma’ Plucker, there was only ever likely to be one answer. Find out what dad thought of the chicken at Ma’ Plucker here

Dad’s review of The Palomar restaurant, Piccadilly, London

Dad first discovered the joys of restaurant reviewing when he started writing for Yelp. Having found it an invaluable resource for finding good places to eat while on holiday in the USA, he started writing to contribute back to the community and he has made many good foodie friends all over the world through the website

He and some of his friends have started a foodie blog, www.boozybunch.com though being teetotal himself, you can guess that he didn’t choose the name! Their motto is that if they can eat it and drink it, it’s fair game! So far in the first few weeks, they’ve reviewed restaurants from Soho to Seoul, shared cookery school experiences with Michelin-starred chefs and home cooking with ingredient delivery services Continue reading

The new Star Wars movie is so close that I can almost feel the Force!

Dad and I are old enough to have watched Star Wars: A New Hope (episode 4) in the cinema in 1977. The special effects at that time were revolutionary and helped to seal dad’s fascination with science fiction

Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi completed the trilogy and propelled the films to legendary status. Though the special effects have dated, so many references from those films remain in modern popular culture

A discreet veil should drawn over the dark days of the second trilogy though dad and I did enjoy episode 3 Continue reading

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market

As the winter chills set in this month, it really is starting to feel like winter. Time to get my teddy scarf out methinks

Dad and I have been to several Christmas markets in Germany and while they were fun short trips abroad, we did find some of them a little disappointing – not much variety in the food offerings and the merchandise cheap and nasty

My mom to be lives in Winchester, the old capital of England. The city has a historic feel to it and well worth a trip. The cathedral is a focal point for the town and it is celebrating the 10th year of holding its Christmas market

Held in the shadow of the cathedral, there are stalls offering cooked food, food products and assorted gifts as well as an outdoor ice rink Continue reading
